Decorative palms and wild chestnut protection

The idea of ​​protecting plants from pests by injecting herbicides into the bark (in the trunk) gained practical significance only fifty years back. With the injection of the bark, the term endothelial can also be linked because it is a direct introduction of plant protection products into the conveyor batches of plants without releasing it into the outer environment. This fact is one of the main reasons why such a form of application is particularly suitable for urban areas where daily activity of the population takes place in close proximity to ornamental plants. The risk of potential contact between humans, pets and other non-target organisms is incomparably lower in the case of injecting method compared to, for example, spraying methods.

Since 2019, Agrobiotest has been providing services for the protection of decorative palms and wild chestnuts by microinjection in a solid methodology patented by Syngenta. The methodology encompasses specific applicators which inject the insecticide directly to the conduction bundles under certain pressure.

On palm trees, this methodology achieves protection from the red palm pipe (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus), while wild chestnut can be effectively protected from chestnut leaf miner (Cameraria ohridella).

The red palm tree pipe is a highly devastating pest on canary dunes (Phoenix canariensis) and we can say that it spread over our shore in the short term and in some parts caused a real devastation of canary dates.

Basic features of protection by injecting method:

  • Closed application system - no surface dispersion of the preparation, no drift
  • High level of environmental safety due to closed mode of application
  • High level of security for a person who applies funds
  • High efficiency
  • Long-lasting protection - one treatment per year on palm trees, that is one in three years on a wild chestnut

The optimum application time is at the time of intense upward spillage of juices in the conduit bundles, which in our area mostly occurs in March, April and the first half of May.
